Santa Monica has been so gray this month. I have been crazy-occupied with non-Zoom related issues but I have gotten a new wind and the biggest to-do item on my list is a website redesign. I am kind of bored with what I have now and a whole new look has been in the back of my head for a ling time. My ZOOMZABEBE labels, which I have had for 8 months now are evidence of the direction I want to go. Very clean and stream-lined. They are natural twill with light teal and brown lettering. On my recent trip back to Chicago, I talked to my cousin Jen of Starving Artist Bazaar and she is totally on board to set me up.
My goal is to seperate the baby and kids line from the adult tees and knits. Big changes ahead!
For now, I am going to redo the existing site to have a clearance page seperate from my new kid stuff. I have been working on new designs and methods.
I also need PR stuff like media kits, Line Sheets, and probably a new press realease. Also and the hardest for me, is going to stores to peddle my wares.
I decided not to apply for Felt Club in July but I do love that show and hope to apply for the Holiday one.

Here are some new kids tees I have been working on. I am phasing out my old blanks and will be using American Apparel tees from now on. I think they are softer and of better quality.

Phresh/art/live show

Well, at least I got to hear live music for my $75 application fee...It's too bad the organizers did not really advertise this show as one with vendors. Instead, it was a gallery shwing that happened to have some vendors in the back room.
Here is my booth. I was a decent size (5'x10'). I made the zoomzabebe display for this show. I think I will be using it alot more.

I barely made the fee back. The worst part is that the one credit card transaction I had turned bad. The buyer was another vendor and I have emailed her about it. It would be a little uncomfortable since she is also a vendor at Bazaar Bizarre. Hopefully she will make it right and give me a valid CC number. ugh.

Christine (Two Space) and Anne (Anne Ma Designs) were also there and pretty much had the same experience as I.

I met a few cool peeps and there was even free wine (2-buck Chuck), beer and snacks. That was nice but it was kind of unnerving when someone would be shopping your booth with a large cup of alcohol teetering in their hand. I ended up leaving before the midnight end of the show since there was little happening.

This weekend is Felt Club XL. The pr has been fab-o-lous and even thought the booth sizes are tiny (4'x6') I have higher hopes.

Pretty much all the prices for zoomzabebe tees and onesies have been lowered. Tees that were $25 are now $20. Same for onesies.

I have made about 5 baby blankets and they are pretty darn cute, if I say so myself. They are all made with minky dot fabric that is sooo soft and cuddly. The first one I made was with red minky and a flannel that had circles on it. I will post some photos here later.

I got into the Holiday Felt Club XL show! It is December 9 at the Ukranian Center in LA. With Bazaar Bizarre the next weekend, December should be rockin.

Well I have been a bad blogger! But I do have some good excuses. I was in Alaska for my brother in laws wedding (July 29) and I have been prepping for our first ever garage sale! woo hoo! Kind of low brow but an American tradition. It went well but tomorrow the crafting begins anew... I must put my new onesie designs up on the sight as well as my WOW tees. I made my first baby blanket and it turned out quite good. Very exciting. I may just have to make an adult one for myself for movie watching. Can you all say moviebeam?

September brings the
Brentwood Art Show (Sept 17) and
Abbot Kinney Festival (Sept 24).

Mucho crafting to be done between now and then. But for now I enjly my glass of Chianti and my crispy chocolate chip cookie. Alas Sunday will not be a day of rest pour moi. At least I received my new CDs from Amazon today-Dashboard Confessional, India Arie, Brandi Carlisle, Keane, and Dixie Chicks- to listen to as I sew and cut. Any other CDs I should get?

Global warming?

Boy has it been a scorcher of a summer! I live by the coast and we have maybe a few days a summer that are unbearable. This year has been really different. I may sound like a baby-but we don't have AC. I do have a little Vornado fan in my craft room though...

Tomorrow, Mark and I (along with his parents) are off to Alaska for the nuptuals of Marks brother Michael. Lots of sun and lots of mosquitos. Actually, it is raining where we are going, so just the mosquitos. It should be a fun time.

For those of you who are familiar with the Starving Artist Bazaar, Jenny (my cousin) of SAB has finally found a donor kidney and will have her transplant surgery today. Let's all send our positive vibes her way and for her donor too (She calls him Mr. D.)

Tomorrow I get my new sewing machine! Hurray! I am so excited. The one I have now is so archaic. I am going to get a Huskystar. It's not that pricey but a huge improvement on what I am using.

So many ideas floating in my brain...Crafting A.D.D has become an increasing problem for me lately.

Felt Club-July

The backside of Melt down Comics
Here is my booth. I had to use my umbrella for the first few hours to protect my tees that are in plastic. I hate it when condensation forms in them. I may just stop using plastic but they fit so well in my vintage suitcases.

Today was a fun day. Even though it was uncomfortably hot and customer traffic was pretty low, I can't wait to do this show again. In September, it goes indoors so no more sunscreen and umbrellas will be necessary. I had requested a spot by the building so come 2pm, I would be in the shade. It worked out great.
I arrived at around 9:30 am and to delight, my neighbor was TwoSpace. I knew then that the day would be a good one. Christine and Kent are alot of fun and Christines Mom, Nancy was visiting from Michigan.

The one negative about the space was the aroma of urine baking in the Hollywood sun. Luckily, that passed when we were in the shade. Or else I just got used to it...
My first sale was a "Future Democrat" onesie. I silk-screened a bunch the day before. I mentioned to another customer who was laughing at these (in a good way) that I had sold out of "Future Republican". He didn't believe me. The rest of the day was a sporadic exercise in selling. I think it was just too hot to shop.
Another customer cracked me up when he was asking where the fishie tees were. He had just been looking at them and when I pointed them out, he said "Oh, I though that was some fantastical creature." I suppose my fishie is a bit different in that it is a head-on view and not a side view but I think it still looks like a fish.

A few months ago, I ordered a bag from Cake Mountain. Hazel had it for me and I love it!

I also traded one of my strawberry hat to Kent and Christine for one of Kents leather cuffs. I have been coveting one since I first say them last year and now I have one!

It is awesome!

I also got some prints and a book from Jordan Crane. His work is very cool.
Tomorrow, I start working on some new t-shirt ideas I have.
All in all, a craftastic day.

I have thinking about doing a shirt like this for a while now. Last week when I was at my local fabric store, I saw this cute print and was inspired to just do it.
It will be available in S-M-L.
Here is a bag that is one of the newest.

It was knit up with double strands so it is nice and thick.
Sunday looks like the day I will be adding these and other items to the site.

I am working on getting a few more new knit bags listed. I am staring to work with Fetch on the Mac and it is very humbling. I hope the learning curve with FTP is steep...
Here I am with Harry Benjamin, an artist in Silver City, NM. His house/gallery is awesome. Full of a lifetime of kitch culture. I love it. For more on that trip, check out my One Girl, Big World blog.

While in NM, I bought some new yarn and am thinking of knitting up little zip pouches. Also in the pipeline are Zoomzabebe baby blankets. I swear, I must have adult A.D.D because my brain is on overdrive sometimes. How does the saying go...My mind is writing checks that my hands can't cash. Or something to that effect.

Crazy ain't it?
I have been super busy with the website. With the help of Arianne and Aeolidia, ZOOMZAWEAR will have a new look. Exciting. It should be up and running next week.
While on vacation, I knitted up a bunch of new fruit hats like this:

That's one of my new little models. Isn't she a cutie pie? Aside from lemons, I will have tomatos and strawberries. I am still looking for purplish/blue yarn to knit up some blueberries. Any other suggestions?

Anyhoo, there is this fab little yarn store called Yada Yada Yarn. I have an chronic need to buy yarn in every city that I visit-and unfortunately, it is not curable... I was going to pay for my yarn with a credit card but I was told they only tool cash and checks. Bummer right? They offer self-addressed stamped envelopes to remit payment. Huh? How utterly fabulous is that. Ah, small towns...

Off on a Northwest Adventure

So, for the past two weeks, my DH and I have been traveling around the Northwest on a, ahem business trip. Well, we did do some shoots for the
The Random Eye. If you don't know about it, its a new site that shows one0minute biographies of people. Stan Lee is on there. "With great power comes great responsibility" He was great. I also stopped by some kid stores in Ashland, OR and Seattle to get feed back on Zoomzabebe and maybe initiate wholesale relationships.
Anyway, we wine tasted our way up to Seattle and back down through Oregon but, tomorrow, it's back to work. I start the redesign for Zoomzawear. During our trip, I have been knitting up my fruit hats for kids and adults.
I also found out I was accepted at Felt Club for July. Yeah!
So, as I sit in our last bed and breakfast, The Parsonage in Nevada City, CA and write this, I am sad that our vacation in ending but looking forward to going home and checking on our tomatoes. *sigh*

Fashion Coop

On Saturday, I had a booth at fashioncoop. I really wanted to love this show but I have to say I only did OK. It was in a great location (Santa Monica Civic Center) but the crowds just were not there.
That said, I had a good time. The other vendors (well most of them) were so sweet.
Christine of twospace was right across the aisle and we would just crack up at the, um, interesting people who would walk by. I do love LA for the constant supply of characters.

On my left was Nancy of jack-blue Her leather bags and accessories are amazing!
I will definitely be ordering one of them before the summer is over. To tide me over, I bought a leather card case from her.

I loooove it.

At the moment, I am in a craft fair holding pattern. I hopefully will be at Felt Club in July and I am thinking about the LA Tofu Fest. Got Soy?
Until then, I am amping up production and will be turning another year under thirty!

My how time flies...
In May, I was a vendor at Felt Club It's a new, monthly craft fair in the heart on Hollywood. I hope to be there again in July. It's a smaller fair, but I like the number of vendors since the customers really get a chance to appreciate the crafts on display.

It was a scorcher of a day (my unusually tanned forehead could attest to that) but it was a lot of fun. I was next to Krissy of Biggerkrissy and we would wave at the firemen returning from calls. LAFD was right across the alley from us. When a few of them made it over, Krissy presented them with one of her hand-made plushies. So if you see a one-eyed furry monster on the grill of a West Hollywood firetruck, you'll know where it came from.

The Captain actually bought one of my knit bags for his wife. Here he is:

As it was the first ever show, I wasn't sure what to bring, so I brought a ton of stuff. My booth floweth over, as you can clearly see!

Oh and that little umbrella was woefully inadequate.
Luckily, another vendor let my other neighbor, tsai-fi borrow a patio umbrella and we both cowered under that when we could.

Flutter Scarf

This scarf took quite a bit of time to knit but I think the result is fantastic. I have always wanted to try one of these scarves and I'm not sure if I would want to tackle another. It was a difficult decision to offer this on my website, but it is available. The yarn itself is a delicate grey-blue and is a wool-mohair blend-soft, lightweight and warm.

These are my new felt heart pins. I just started needle felting and I am now addicted. It's amazing how enthralling little barbed needles and strips of wool can be!
